Summary/Objective

The Welding Supervisor is responsible for leading the day-to-day activities of the welding department and ensuring projects are completed safely, efficiently, on schedule, and in accordance with CHUTES’ quality standards. This is a hands-on leadership position that combines supervisory responsibilities with advanced welding expertise. The Welding Supervisor plans daily work (work-by-hour), develops employees, monitors quality, enforces safety standards, and drives continuous improvement while actively supporting production when needed.

Essential Functions

Leadership & Production Management

  • Supervise, schedule, and coordinate daily activities of the forming, weld & paint teams.
  • Assign work based on production priorities, employee skill level, and deadlines.
  • Monitor productivity and adjust staffing or priorities as needed to meet production schedules, goals and KPIs.
  • Coach, mentor, and develop team members through ongoing training and performance feedback.
  • Conduct performance discussions and provide recommendations regarding hiring, promotions, discipline, and employee development.
  • Promote accountability while fostering a positive, team-oriented work environment.
  • Lead daily production meetings and communicate priorities, safety concerns, and project status.

Welding & Fabrication

  • Perform advanced MIG welding and fabrication work as required.
  • Interpret shop drawings and specifications to ensure proper fabrication methods.
  • Set up and operate fabrication and machine shop equipment.
  • Perform cutting, grinding, burning, fitting, and welding operations.
  • Troubleshoot fabrication issues and implement effective solutions.
  • Assist with prototype work and complex fabrication projects.

Quality Assurance

  • Ensure all fabricated products meet engineering drawings, specifications, and customer requirements.
  • Perform inspections throughout the fabrication process.
  • Verify measurements, weld quality, and finished products before release.
  • Investigate quality issues and implement corrective actions.
  • Promote continuous improvement initiatives that reduce rework and increase efficiency.

Safety & Equipment

  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, company safety policies, and welding best practices.
  • Conduct routine safety observations and reinforce safe work habits.
  • Maintain welding equipment, tools, and shop machinery in safe operating condition.
  • Coordinate equipment repairs and preventative maintenance.
  • Maintain clean, organized work areas utilizing Lean manufacturing principles.

Other Duties

  • Collaborate with Engineering, Operations, and Sales to resolve production issues.
  • Assist with inventory and material planning.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibility

Directly supervises welding, forming & paint personnel and is responsible for assigning work, coaching employees, monitoring productivity, maintaining quality standards, and ensuring compliance with company policies and safety requirements.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions at construction job sites. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling and climbing all day. The employee must frequently lift or move items over 50 pounds.

Required Education and Experience

  1. High school diploma or GED
  2. 7+ years of welding experience
  3. 3+ years of supervisory or lead experience
  4. AWS Certified
  5. Strong knowledge of MIG welding process
  6. Read and interpret fabrication drawings
  7. Leading teams in a manufacturing environment
  8. Forklift experience
