How Trash Compactors Work and Why They Need Preventative Maintenance
Trash compactors compress waste into smaller, more manageable loads, reducing hauling costs and improving facility cleanliness. These systems rely on hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical components working in sync. Over time, these parts wear down, lines may leak, or motors overheat, leading to reduced performance or system failure.
Our compactor maintenance services include:
Preventive Maintenance and Repairs
Routine maintenance is critical to keeping your trash compactor operating safely and efficiently. CHUTES International offers scheduled inspections and service plans to identify wear, check fluid levels, test system controls, and clean key components. Preventive care reduces the risk of breakdowns, extends equipment life, and ensures consistent compaction performance. Our technicians follow a detailed checklist tailored to your system’s model and usage, helping you avoid unexpected failures and costly downtime. Whether monthly, quarterly, or annually, we’ll build a maintenance schedule that fits your facility’s needs.
On-Hand Replacement Parts
Need a part fast? We stock a full inventory of OEM and compatible compactor replacement parts, including hydraulic cylinders, control panels, switches, and compacting plates. This ensures we can complete most repairs without delays.

Common Trash Compactor Issues We Repair
Our technicians regularly service a wide range of issues, including:
- Units not turning on or failing mid-cycle
- Hydraulic fluid leaks or low fluid levels
- Jammed or misaligned compacting rams
- Foul odors or compactors not fully compressing waste
- Motor, switch, and electrical failures
We work on all major commercial compactor brands and models, including our proprietary DuraPak™ and DuraBagger systems.
When to Call for Service
Not sure if your compactor needs a repair or full replacement? Look for these signs:
- Unusual noises or vibrations
- System failure or inconsistent power
- Noticeable leaks or pooling fluid
- Ineffective compaction or buildup in the trash chute
- Emergency shutdowns or frequent resets
If you’re experiencing any of the above, our team can quickly assess the problem and recommend repair or replacement based on your system’s condition.
Professional vs DIY Repairs
While small issues like cleaning a sensor or clearing a jam might seem manageable, most trash compactor repairs involve high-voltage components and pressurized hydraulics. We strongly recommend professional servicing to ensure safety, system integrity, and compliance with commercial codes.
Compactor Replacement and Warranty Coverage
If your trash compactor is outdated, repeatedly failing, or beyond repair, we can guide you through the replacement process. We offer our own DuraPak™ and DuraBagger models along with full installation and warranty options. Ask about our service contracts for routine maintenance, emergency repairs, and replacement coverage.
How often should I have my trash compactor serviced?
Preventive maintenance should be done every 6 months and oil changes every year.
Why does my compactor run all the time?
Often times, this is explained by the photo eye or reflector being dirty or out of alignment. Cleaning with a damp cloth may fix the issue or adjusting the photo eye to see all 3 lights (red, yellow and green) to go back to auto mode.
Why is my DP-500 compactor not running automatically?
There are four things which disable the automatic operation of a DP-500 Compactor, necessitating a reset:
- Opening the access doors during operation
- Using the Emergency Stop button
- Cutting off electrical power to the compactor
- Disabling and re-enabling the key slot on the compactor
To reset the system, press and hold the black start button for approximately 45 seconds to have the compactor engage to go through a full cycle. Once it runs through the full cycle, the red beacon light should flash on top of the control panel, placing the compactor into auto mode again.
Does my dumpster need to be connected for the compactor to run?
It does not, but it is much safer to run the compactor while the dumpster is on, and we therefore recommend that you keep it connected.
