Chute Fire Prevention and Control

Are you ready for a visit from the fire marshall? NFPA guidelines are very strict and specific when it comes to chute fire prevention and control, and if the system in your building isn’t up to par, you could face heavy citations and fines, or even a shutdown order. Take a look at some excerpts from the NFPA guidelines regarding trash chute and compactor systems within buildings:

  • 11.2.2: Waste and linen chutes and transport systems, including chute intake and discharge doors, shall be inspected and maintained not less than annually in accordance with manufacturers’ instructions.
  • 11.2.2.1: Remove the link for testing every 4 years to ensure full closure and positive latching
  • 11.3.1: Waste compactors shall be inspected and maintained not less than annually in accordance with manufacturers’ instructions.
  • 11.3.2: A written record of the inspection shall be signed and kept for inspection by the AHJ.
